A mine collapse in the municipality of Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé, in the southwestern department of Nariño, killed 14 people and left seven others injured, authorities reported on October 20.
Of the 14 victims, 12 were women, according to the Senate of Colombia's own news report on the tragedy. The figures were independently confirmed by Euronews, which also reported 14 deaths in the Nariño mining accident.
Illegal and artisanal mining is common in Nariño, one of Colombia's most economically vulnerable departments. Authorities have not yet released details on the cause of the collapse or the status of any rescue operation.
The disaster drew immediate attention in Congress, where the Senate noted the incident in its official communications the same day.
