Colombia's outgoing government is defending its peace strategy after the ELN guerrilla group accused security forces of violating prior ceasefire understandings during recent military operations. The accusations have added new strain to an already fragile negotiation process in the final weeks of the Petro administration.
The High Commissioner for Peace responded on July 23, stating that the operations in question targeted dissident structures not covered by existing agreements. Officials insisted the government remains committed to negotiated solutions while maintaining military pressure on active armed groups outside those frameworks.
The dispute comes at a sensitive moment. President Gustavo Petro, constitutionally barred from seeking re-election, is set to hand power to president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella on August 7. The status of the ELN talks and any agreements reached under the current government will be among the most consequential files landing on the incoming administration's desk.
