Colombia's central bank kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged on July 1 after June inflation fell to its lowest level in months, driven by cheaper fuel and stable food prices.

Inflation Eases to 4.2% in June as Banco de la República Holds Rate at 11%

The Banco de la República announced on July 1 that consumer inflation dropped to 4.2% in June, down from 4.8% in May. The central bank opted to hold its benchmark interest rate steady at 11%, signaling a cautious approach even as price pressures continue to ease.

Economists attributed the decline primarily to lower fuel prices and relatively stable food costs, two categories that carry heavy weight in the consumer price index. The back-to-back monthly drops have renewed debate about when the bank might begin a more aggressive rate-cutting cycle.

Currency volatility remains a concern, particularly for exporters who have faced unpredictable exchange-rate swings in recent months. The bank's statement acknowledged the external risk but gave no forward guidance on the rate path.

For Colombian households, the softer inflation reading offers some relief after an extended period of elevated prices, though the 11% rate still reflects borrowing costs that remain high by historical standards.
