De la Espriella Government Marks One Month With Spending Cuts and State Overhaul
President Abelardo de la Espriella's administration highlighted the liquidation of the Ministry of Equality and other restructuring moves as it completed its first month in office.

The government of President Abelardo de la Espriella, which took office in August 2026, marked its first month on Wednesday by presenting a package of measures aimed at reducing public spending and reorganizing the Colombian state.
Speaking from Cali on 16 September, administration officials pointed to three emblematic actions: the liquidation of the Ministry of Equality, the introduction of a new National Transit Code, and changes to the so-called emisoras de paz, the peace radio stations established under the previous government.
The measures were framed as part of a broader strategy of fiscal adjustment and institutional restructuring that the de la Espriella administration intends to pursue in the months ahead. The president took office after winning the June 2026 runoff against Ivan Cepeda of the outgoing Historic Pact coalition.
Outgoing president Gustavo Petro, who was constitutionally barred from seeking a second term, handed over power on 7 August 2026 after four years in office.
