De la Espriella Forms Emergency Team to Tackle Energy Risks, Requests Budget Transfer

President Abelardo de la Espriella addressed the nation on Monday, announcing the creation of a special team to coordinate the government's response to energy-supply risks linked to El Niño conditions. The televised address came as Colombia faces mounting pressure on its power grid.

De la Espriella also asked Congress to approve a 1.2-trillion-peso budget transfer to help manage those risks. In the same address, he announced 1 trillion pesos earmarked for reconstruction efforts following the August 10 earthquake.

The announcements signal an active early agenda for the president, who took office on August 7 after winning the June runoff against Ivan Cepeda of the Historic Pact. The energy and reconstruction measures are among the first major domestic policy moves of his administration.
