Colombia in Washington for IMF Talks as Fiscal Pressures Mount

Colombia's finance ministry team traveled to Washington for discussions with the International Monetary Fund, Reuters reported on October 8, as the government sought options to address mounting fiscal pressures.

Economists and current and former officials cited by Reuters said there were significant challenges ahead in meeting the commitments that would be required under a possible lending agreement with the Fund.

The talks come as Colombia also moves to shore up its 2026 budget through other channels. The country's public-credit commission approved processing three loans from Germany's development bank KfW, totaling up to 497 million euros, with disbursements expected before the end of the year, according to The Rio Times.

The back-to-back moves signal that the outgoing Petro administration, which serves until president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella is inaugurated on August 7, is working on multiple fronts to stabilize public finances before the transition of power.
