Colombia and the United States Move Toward a Reciprocal Trade Agreement

The governments of Colombia and the United States announced this week that they are working toward a reciprocal trade agreement, following a meeting between U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Colombian Commerce Minister Mauricio Gómez Amín, according to El Espectador and La República.
Both sides said they are exploring ways to deepen market access for goods and services. Reports indicate that Colombia is seeking to align the trade process with its broader reconstruction and economic recovery agenda following the August 10 earthquake.
The talks come at a moment when the Colombian peso has strengthened considerably. La República reported that the peso's revaluation has accelerated imports by roughly 14 percent at the end of June, while the trade deficit has doubled compared with June 2025, raising concerns among business associations and analysts about the country's external balance.
For the Colombian diaspora in the United States, the outcome of these negotiations could have practical implications for the cost of goods moving between the two countries, as well as for Colombian exporters navigating a stronger peso.
