COLCAP rises 0.84% and peso strengthens as central bank calls for fiscal discipline
Colombian markets posted gains on August 15 even as Banrep urged the incoming government to raise revenue and cut spending to manage fiscal pressures.

Colombia's COLCAP index closed at 2,452 on Saturday, up 0.84% on the session, continuing a recovery from 52-week lows as oil-linked stocks found support. The Colombian peso also appreciated, reaching 3,124 per US dollar, a gain of 0.71% that put the currency near its strongest level in a year.
The market moves came alongside a policy signal from the Banco de la República. On August 14, Banrep advised the incoming government to both raise revenue and cut spending in order to manage fiscal pressures while sustaining growth.
The central bank cited preliminary estimates of approximately 2.7% year-on-year GDP growth in the second quarter of 2026, suggesting the economy has maintained momentum even as the country absorbs the shock of the earthquake and its reconstruction costs.
